2. K56flex, x2, or V.90? Buy what your ISP uses!
The ITU approved an draft international 56K standard, V.90, in February, 1998, and officially ratified it September, 1998. Even though there is a standard, not all ISPs support it right now. Even when your ISP does upgrade their x2 and K56flex equipment to V.90, their equipment may work better with the protocol it originally supported, at least for a while. By all means, you should get a modem that supports V.90. All new V.90 modems also support an older protocol, either K56flex or x2. If your ISP doesn't support V.90 yet, get a V.90 modem that also supports the older protocol that they do support. That's good advice even if your ISP does support V.90: if there are any incompatibilities between the V.90 in your modem and theirs, you can fall back to one of the older protocols.
Next rule: Buy a modem that supports V.90
