3. Buy a modem that supports V.90
In February, 1998, the ITU approved a draft 56K standard, called V.90. The ITU officially ratifed V.90 in September, 1998. Everyone will evenutally support V.90, just as everyone supports other ITU standards, such as V.34 for 28.8, or V.17 for fax modems. To avoid being left out in the cold, you'll need a modem either supports V.90 out of the box, or is upgradeable to V.90. 56K.COM maintains a list of companies guaranteeing free upgrades to V.90. It's preferable to get a modem that supports V.90 out of the box, just to avoid potential upgrade hassles.
Next rule: Buy a name brand modem
