Mac Modem Script Frequently Asked Questions

How do I tell my programs to use the new modem script?

AppleTalk Remote Access 2.1:

AppleTalk Remote Access is a program for remotely logging into AppleTalk networks. It requires an ARA server at the other end of the connection. ARA is not available for downloading, but Apple's FTP has a set of ARA updates. AppleTalk Remote Access is part of System 7.6, though you may need to do a custom install of the system software. ARA is also sold separately. System 7.6 and ARA 2.1 cost about the same, so buying System 7.6 and getting ARA for free is the most economical solution.

  1. If this is a pre-2.1 version of ARA, quit the Remote Access Client.
  2. Open the Remote Access Setup control panel (Apple Menu->Control Panels).
  3. Select the modem script in the Modem: popup menu.
  4. Close the Remote Access Setup control panel.

Apple PPP for Open Transport

Apple PPP for Open Transport is a PPP dialer that is enhanced for Apple's Open Transport networking. It is native for PowerPC, but also works on 68K Macs. PPP for OT is part of System 7.6 and later, and can be downloaded from Apple's FTP site in the Open Transport area. For notes and system requirements, check the read me file.

  1. Open the Modem control panel (Apple Menu->Control Panels).
  2. Select the new modem script from the Modem: popup menu.
  3. Choose Quit from the File menu.
  4. When asked if you want to save changes to the current configuration, click the Save button.
