The Wall Street Journal has an article about security problems on wireless networks. Free2air.org has a discussion of war driving: driving around with a laptop and a wireless modem looking for open wireless networks. CNET reports that AT&T will raise cable modem rates by $6/month starting June 1. @Link's 11,000 DSL customers lost service last week. @Link's provider, Norlight Communications, cut the company off after it failed to make service payments. Norlight later resumed @Link's service to allow it to make other arrangements. With DSL companies going under right and left, Slashdot has a timely discussion of what to do with old DSL modems. MSN is acquiring Qwest.net's 500,000 customers. Most of the customers are dialup, but the count includes some DSL customers. Excite@Home is laying off 13% of its staff. CNET's John Borland has a post-mortem of PSINet. EarthLink will offer two-way satellite service over most of the US by the end of the month. Cost is $69.95 per month, plus $649 for equipment and $250 for installation. EarthLink is partnering with Hughes Networks DirecPC to provide the service. ISPs may be drawn into the legal tangle between file-sharing services and copyright owners. Major movie and record studios are increasingly calling on ISPs to sanction users who are trading pirated material.
