Always On/Dynamic ISDN
New twist on an old technology: Always On/Dynamic ISDN uses an ISDN line's D (controller) channel to allow a server to bring up a connection to a home ISDN user. This technology has the potential to blur the distinction between being online and being offline. If someone sends you email, the server could bring up the connection long enough to transfer the email to your computer. There could also be interesting applications for running a home FTP server or web server.
Always On/Dynamic ISDN will require support from the phone company, and Internet service provider. Phone company surcharges are estimated at five to twenty dollars per month. The non-profit Vendors Industry Association has been involved in the development of the technology, and has more information on their web page.
