Alan Sterger posted this neat tip to comp.dcom.modems. Using the UNIX finger command, do a "finger xxxyyy@nccom.com" where "xxx" is the area code and "yyy" is the first three digits of the phone number. The results will give you information about your number, or your ISP's dialin number. If you don't have access to UNIX, download a finger program. You can also try a Web finger gateway, though most of the ones Yahoo! lists are either AWOL or nonfunctional.

Note that not all numbers are registered with this database, so this will work for some numbers and not others.

Lucent has responded to the Boardwatch cover story with a press release noting that Lucent-based K56flex modems took the top three slots in C|Net/Computers.com's performance tests of 56K modems. The press release has been added to 56K.COM's special report on the controversial Boardwatch story.

Global Village expects to ship V.90 modems by late March. V.90 upgrades for existing GV x2 and K56flex modems are expected in April.

A piece by Ben Heskett of News.com discusses a security problem with Ascend's software for MAX and Pipeline products. Ascend MAXes are used by thousands of ISPs to provide dial-up modem and ISDN service.

Wired News reports that Network Solutions will lower domain registration and maintenance fees on April 1st. The price to register a new domain will drop from $100 to $70. Annual maintenance fees will drop from $50 to $35.
