Zoom is shipping a V.90 PCI modem that supports V.90 and
K56flex simultaneously. The new model supports V.80
videoconferencing, and has an expected street price of just
$79 to $89. No information was available on Zoom's web site
at press time, but Zoom did send us a press
release.
The San
Francisco Chronicle reports that 3Com is looking for a
new executive to run day-to-day operations.
Motorola will lay off 15,000 employees and incur a $2
billion restructuring fee, says Wired.
V.90 upgrades
Cirrus
Logic announced that it shipped V.90 upgrade code to its
OEM partners. The OEM modem makers now must modify the code
for their products and distribute it to customers. Cirrus
Logic has a list of links to its OEM
modem partners.
Shawn Saunders of Archtek wrote to say that Archtek
now has V.90 firmware upgrades for its SmartLink modems.

V.90 upgrades.
Global Village has released V.90 upgrades for their
PowerPort PCMCIA modems for Macintosh (thanks, O'Grady's
PowerPage).
Graham Marsh noticed that Hayes posted V.90 upgrades for
the Accura 5674 or 5670, then pulled them. He says that the
upgrade worked OK on his 5674. New upgrades may be posted
soon, so check Hayes' 56K
Standard page.

After our Monday note that Diamond Multimedia had posted
V.90 beta firmware, Diamond pulled the upgrades because of a
problem with the .inf files. A new package was posted
Tuesday at the Diamond beta
page. If you have the earlier beta, you should download
this one to get the latest .inf files.
E-Tech now
has V.90 firmware upgrades available for download (thanks,
Stefan Elsinga).
PC Computing has a feature on cable
modems vs. ADSL. Every magazine is doing cable and DSL
pieces, but this one at least has some nifty JavaScript
programming to recommend it.
Because of ongoing problems with Site Search, I've
switched back to Simple
Search. It isn't as fast or as fancy, but it is very
reliable.

Ascend has released V.90 code for its MAX servers. This
code will allow a large number of ISPs to upgrade to V.90.
The V.90 code is free, and is backwards-compatible with
K56flex, V.34, and V.FC, as well as even older protocols.

As predicted in Friday's Newsflash, Diamond Multimedia
posted beta V.90
firmware this weekend, just barely meeting their May
deadline.
Dave Bower notes that Motorola
has revised the expected release date for V.90 upgrades to
early June.

Acer
Components and NewCom
are now shipping V.90 modems.
Semiconductor
Business News reports that sales of high-speed digital
modems are expected to triple this year, but that 56K modems
will still dominate the market. Robert Castellano, president
of market research firm The Information Network, made these
predictions for 1998 modem sales in units - 56K analog
modems: 26.4 million; ADSL: 730,000; cable modems: 640,000;
ISDN: 683,000.
