Hughes Network Systems has rolled out version
2.0 of its DirecPC satellite service. Perhaps the
biggest change is the pricing structure, which no longer
makes a distinction between daytime use and night time use.
The service now incorporates push technology for news
delivery, and provides easier installation and billing.

For the past month I've been working on The Mac
Demystified, second edition, for Doubleday. I'm happy to
report that the book is finished and the editors approved
the final manuscript yesterday! The book is on its way to
the printer and should be available in stores late August.
UUNet,
a division of WorldCom, has deployed V.90 at more than 700
of its POPs (points of presence). UUNet's network provides
dial-in access for many other ISPs, including EarthLink,
who now supports V.90 at those same 700 locations. UUNet
also provides service for MSN Premier, Alterdial, Internet
9-5, VIP Reseller Dial, and Extralink Remote, and is one of
the providers for AOL's dial-in network, AOLnet. The
upgraded POPs will continue to support K56flex. There will
be no extra charge for V.90 service.
Logicode's Web site
now gives the message "This site is no longer available."
Logicode went out of business a few months ago, but still
maintained their Web presence. As recently as a few weeks
ago they believed they would still be able to ship V.90
upgrades.
Joe Phillips writes:
Driver upgrades are now available for
Fujitsu
Lifebook 56Kflex DSVD LT Modem. While this
does not flash the modem to v.90, it does improve
cross-compatibility w/ X2 systems. Fujitsu tech dept.
informs me that the v.90 upgrade WILL be available around
the middle of July. It will be available on their Web
site as well as sent directly to registered owners of
Lifebook series notebooks.

Web
Excel has beta V.90 firmware. I generally don't
recommend beta firmware, but it is a sign that the finished
upgrade may be available soon.
