Wednesday's survey was a huge success. 1,000 people
responded in two days. Thanks to everyone who took part in
the survey!
Carmen
Noble of PC Week reports that DirecPC users have filed a
class action lawsuit against Hughes Network Systems. The
suit hinges on Hughes's Fair Access Policy, which reduces
bandwidth to customers it deems are abusing the service by
using too much bandwidth.
Kay Paumier spotted the NovaWeb Technologies NovaWeb2000,
which allows multiple computers to access the Internet via a
single phone line. The system is bundled with Ethernet cards
and uses Windows 95 network drivers, so the computers can
also share printers and files.

Link Board revamped
I've spent the past week performing a major upgrade to
the site. The Modem Link
Board has been transformed from a static list to a
database using Gossamer
Threads Links. Like the Free For All Links program I
used before, readers can add links to the pages, but the new
program works much better:
- The database can check links to make sure they still
work. Out of the 600 or so links I imported into the
database, about 50 were bad.
- Links are automatically sorted, so I don't have to
break out the text editor to alphabetize the links.
- Links aren't added directly to the board. Instead,
they're stored in a temporary database and I receive an
email that a link has been submitted, so that I can
either approve or reject the link. This will prevent the
occasional spamming that happened with the old Link
Board.
- Long lists are broken into multiple pages for quicker
page loading.
- The program automatically marks new links and popular
links, and records how many times a link has been clicked
on.
The new program works so well that I've imported several
pages from other parts of the site into the Link Board,
including the firmware updates page and the V.90 upgrades
page. The inits and drivers page may be next, and I'm
considering the program for other uses on the site. Stay
tuned.
News
Jason Quinn wrote us about Atlas modems:
I work as a support tech for an ISP and your
site is very valuable to me. Thank you for your hard
work. My comment is that Best Buy is selling modems with
the brand name Atlas. Atlas has a website (www.atlasperipherals.com),
but there's no information about the products. After some
research, we found that the modems are manufactured by
NewCom and all of the information is available at
www.newcominc.com).
NewCom recently acquired
Simple Technology, Inc., of Santa Clara, California.
Shawn W. Shuler had a note about the modems in Quantex
computers:
Just wanted to let you know that for most
recent buyers of Quantex systems, the modem manufacturer
is Smart Modular Technologies at www.smartm.com . This
may be a useful link (or at least the drivers page) for
your manuf. lists. They do offer V90 upgrades and Windows
driver upgrades. You have to look in separate places for
each.
