Free ISPs are gaining popularity in the United Kingdom, and Virgin founder Richard Branson is getting in on the act. Wired explains why free ISPs in the United Kingdom can easily make money.

This week Intel unveiled the Pentium III. The new chip will which is scheduled to ship February 26 at speeds of 450 and 500 MHz. Intel will ship a 550 MHz part in the middle of the second quarter. Gamespot looks at the prospects for PIII-optimized games that take advantage of the new chip's 3D instruction set.

Privacy advocates are concerned because each chip has a unique serial number - intended to enhance electronic commerce - that could be used to track user's online habits. Last month Intel announced that it would offer a patch to allow customers to disable the ID number, though it will be on by default.

IBM and RedHat inked a deal to ship Linux on select IBM ThinkPads, Netfinity servers, and IntelliStations.

Monday was Microsoft Refund Day, an event planned by the Linux community to demand refunds for unused copies of Windows.

Intel is in talks with Libit Signal Processing Ltd to develop host-based cable modems.
