SAN ANTONIO, Aug. 26 -- For the first time, notebook computer manufacturers can transform their products into a complete communications tool thanks to the release of DATA RACE's (Nasdaq-NNM: RACE) WinMAX56(TM) and WinMAX56SP(TM) products. In addition to supporting full-duplex speaker phone and video conferencing, the WinMAX56SP is the only 56K technology PCMCIA modem on the market that supports the added capability of a handset or headset interface, providing the computer user the option of private telephone conversations.
"The notebook computer is evolving into a mobile office," said Haig Sarkissian, DATA RACE vice president of OEM sales and marketing. "An effective mobile office must provide connectivity to all office communications, including telephone as well as fax and data. With the WinMAX56SP solution, notebook computer manufacturers can differentiate their products by offering rich communications capabilities for telephony, speakerphone, and video conferencing, in addition to data and fax."
The WinMAX56SP supports the ITU V.80 modem standard and has been tested with INTEL's ProShare(TM) video conferencing application. It also supports DATA RACE's patent-pending WinTALK(TM) technology for full-duplex speaker phone operation on a PCMCIA card. When coupled with a TAPI-compliant phone dialer, the WinMAX56SP allows a notebook computer user to place and receive telephone calls easily, use the phone directory, and program speed dial buttons and calling card numbers.
"These capabilities take remote communications to the next level of interactivity. This means notebook manufacturers can quickly and easily meet escalating demands for mobile computing devices that do more than just compute, " Mr. Sarkissian commented.
WinMAX56 for fax and data and WinMAX56SP for fax, data, and telephony support the industry standard K56flex(TM) protocol. The modem's DSP uses SRAM memory and is software upgradeable to the upcoming ITU-T 56K protocol. Geared for the Windows(R) operating system, both are suited to Windows 95 and Windows NT. These products offer exceptionally high data throughput because they use the notebook's own Pentium(R) processor for controller functions.
The WinMAX56 product is available immediately to notebook computer OEMs for sampling. The WinMAX56SP product is scheduled for September 1997 sampling.
