HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ via Individual Inc.
-- Motorola's Transmission Products Division today announced it will immediately begin shipping the next generation in its highly acclaimed PC Card line, the MobileSURFR(TM) 56K PC Card modem. Designed for the mobile computer user who needs performance up to 56Kbps data and fax support of 14.4Kbps, as well as remote access to corporate networks, e-mail and the Internet, the MobileSURFR 56K will be available at an estimated street price of $199.
Based on K56flex technology, users can download graphics and text files from the Internet at speeds up to 56Kbps(A) and send files at up to 33.6Kbps. Also, Motorola's patented V.34 technology is fully "backward" compatible and will automatically connect at the highest speed supported by the modem at the other end.
The MobileSURFR 56K is the first 56K PC Card to offer cellular direct connect functionality so users easily can connect to Motorola cellular phones. In addition to expanded cellular features to support auto-dialing, auto-answering and auto-cable detect, the MobileSURFR is compatible with Motorola's most popular cellular phones, including the MicroTAC(TM), MicroTAC Elite(TM) and StarTAC(TM) phones.
Motorola's PC Cards were the first to receive MC2 Certification from Motorola's Cellular Subscriber Group, guaranteeing end users that Motorola PC Cards are developed and tested with the highest quality standards and provide seamless integration with Motorola phones.
Additionally, the MobileSURFR 56K is the first 56K PC Card to support the Windows(R) CE operating system, the newest operating system offered by Microsoft for handheld computer devices. This gives the growing number of users who rely on these portable devices even greater connectivity.
"We're making it even more practical for today's user to go mobile with Motorola," said Iain Morris, vice president and general manager of Motorola's Transmission Products Division. "The MobileSURFR 56K is a feature rich modem optimized for Motorola's cellular phones, giving mobile users yet another solution from a company with strong product offerings for mobile professionals."
Owners of the MobileSURFR 56K who register in Motorola's Tidal Wave Preferred Customer Program are eligible for a free upgrade to the ITU standard, anticipated to be available in early 1998. Customers can easily register by phone, 1-800-4-A-MODEM (1-800-426-6336) or online at www.mot.com/tidalwave.
The MobileSURFR 56K package includes Ring Central data/fax communications software and a trial offer from America Online. Though this modem is capable of 56Kbps download performance, line impairments, public telephone infrastructure and other external technological factors currently prevent maximum 56Kbps connections.
