DSL ISPs Cable Companies Dialup Internet Service Providers

Special Report:

Six months with a cable modem

Cost

My cable company charges $29.95 per month without the rental fees. Franchise fees and taxes drive the bill up to $34.01. Cable modem rental was an extra $10 a month, or I could buy the modem outright for $200. Installation was $150, with a $50 discount for purchasing the cable modem. Summary: $300 to get started, then $34 a month afterwards, or $150 to get started, then $44 a month afterwards.

Some cable companies offer cable modem access even if you don't have cable TV, though that isn't true with my cable company. To avoid having to use traps that block cable modem access to people who aren't paying for it, they require customers to have at least basic cable TV.

If you're currently paying for a second phone line for your computer, two-way cable modem service can pay for itself by allowing you to cancel your Internet service and second phone line. Otherwise you'll wind up paying more for cable modem service.
