DSL ISPs Cable Companies Dialup Internet Service Providers
This is a followup to my post in September.
Modem: Hayes Accura 56K External
Firmware: 1.002 beta
ISP: Same central phone office, Ascend Max 56K modem bank
I took my modem to a friend's house nearer the central office and got on at 40000 first try.
I rewired my house and still could not break the 33.6 barrier.
I borrowed a friend's Zoom and got on at 44000.
On a hunch, I visited the Hayes beta site and found 1.120, downloaded and installed.
First connect was at 42000.
Upload with Cute FTP of a 840K zipped to the max file - 2.75KB/sec to my directory on my ISP.
Download same file - 4.44 KB/sec
I am finally happy with the modem but I still feel that Hayes support stinks. I am on record there as a customer with a documented problem. I was not informed of the new beta release, which appears to have been there 3 weeks prior to me stumbling across it. Next one will be a Zoom or a Supra.

ISP: Ascend MAX 4000 w/56K 12 port cards software 5.0 AP 27
CONNECT RATE: Consistently 48K from all POP's
TXFR RATE: Upstream 2.35 KB/s Downstream 5.20 KB/s
All in all I am pleased with the test results. Initially we had some problems with the local telco actually, their Nortel DMS-10 switch had to be modified, as the trunks into the Ascend had the wrong padding. But now we are having huge sucess network wide.
We have also tested the BOCA, MOTOROLA, SUPRA, ZOOM and PHILIPS modems with much the same results. I have a sweet spot in my heart for the ACURA though.

Firmware: v1.002
ISP: cybernex.net w/Livingston Portmaster-2e's
Platform: Win95-OEM-SR2
Consistent connection at 48000. None lower, none higher. FTP at 5.06K/sec with 145KB ZIPped file. No disconnect problems whatsoever.

I am using a Hayes k56flex internal, V0.519. Seeing nothing greater than 28.8k with 3.0k on DL from ISP server of ZIP file. Communicating with Livingston PM3 modem server. Upgrade to V1.002 firmware was worse. Max connect speed was 24k with upstream 21.6. Included &F S202=32 and S95=1 to get true DCE speed but no help. Phone links??? USR test link says OK sometimes, not ok others. Not reliable!

Initial Connect: 50,000
Transfer rates: 4.5-4.9 zip files (800K to 1.3 MB)
Never kicked off and consistently connect between 48 and 50k.

Firmware: 0.519
ISP: Ascend 56K, verified latest revision
Results: Will not log on at all unless 56K is disabled in string.
Same results at the Ascend test line.
Firmware: 1.002 beta
Results: varies from 26400 to 33600. Same results at the Ascend test line.
Hayes is being extremely nonresponsive...if I had to do it over again Hayes would be the LAST modem I would buy. ISP recommends Supra or Zoom.
My line passes the US Robotics X2 test.
Hayes: If you are listening, I want a RMA and my 33.6 back that I traded in along with my money back. This has been a very unpleasant experience.

Hayes Accura 56k using .520 firmware
Initial connect speed: 40k
Transfer rates: 7-8K/s on text files (800k), 3.6-4.5 on a zip file.(200k)
I got several disconnections before changing the init string to:
AT &F MS=56,0,34000,44000
After this, I did not get disconnected, although I noticed several pauses in transmission.
