I've test a LT WinModem as found HP Pavilion computers (mine is a 8160). Initial connect speeds alternate between 31,200 - 33,600 - 34,000 - 50,000. I've achieved more consistent connects at 50,000 by setting the S38 register to request connect speeds of 52,000. I've also downloaded the latest driver at http://www.hp-at-home.com/main_p/news/dld_us/DSD_US.html. This is version 4.07 dated September 4, 1997.
FTP download time from my ISP using a 324,769 zipped file was 4.56 Kbytes/second. I am continuing to investigate various avenues to improve reliablility etc.
