Survey results: how fast is your 56K modem?

Zoom 2849 K56Flex External.

Connecting to an Ascend MAX (unsure of model) modem server. CONSISTENTLY connecting at 42000bps, only one bad connect during handshaking resulting in a standard 33600 connection.

File size: 654900bytes

File name: ma21.zip (Microangelo)

Peak rate: 5.00Kb/s

Avg. rate: 4.24Kb/s

Although these speeds are great I'm noticing no speedup in my file downloads over my old 14.4USRSportster. It could be do to tinkering with MTU settings with MTUSpeed. Or, of course, due to heavy traffic.

Great modem!! The support from Zoom is what made me buy this modem.

Zoom/FaxModm 56Kx Model 2849 external

I have been using a Zoom/FaxModm 56Kx Model 2849 external modem for a couple of weeks now. I regularly connect to my ISP JPS.NET at 48000, and only a couple of times below 44000.

For a download test I downloaded ie4setup.exe (from JPS.NET) a 414K file and averaged 5120 b/s

I also downloaded an uncompressed text file of 300k at an average speed of 10531 b/s.

I am pretty happy with both the modem and the ISP.

Zoom Internal, Model 2819

I have tried two K56Flex modems with my ISP, Erols. With the Zoom internal version, model 2819, I get between 36000 and 42000. With the Motorola internal Modemsurfr, I get between 40000 and 44000. This line gets between 28.8 and 31.2 with regular v.34.

I must say, however, that there is still quite a bit of difference between ISDN over Ethernet via a Cisco router at 64K and the 44K that this analog modem gets. For users who can get flat rate ISDN, that seems like a far better solution. For me, in Bell Atlantic land, the $40/month for ISDN usage is getting to be a bit much, so that's why I'm considering analog.

I hope this is helpful to your readers. (I wasn't able to get an ftp to an Erols server, but I did see downloads of about 4.0K-4.2K/sec using a Web browser, downloading both flash rom updates.)

Zoom Internal

Well, I must say that overall I'm happy with the purchase of the Zoom 56k internal modem.

Although I've had some fairly unstable connections at times, most of my connections are solid. Tweaking on the modem initialization string should fix that... ( I hope :P )

My initial connection speeds are ususally 40000 or 42000.

Most of my downloading registers about 4.4k/s - 4.5k/s. I've repeatedly downloaded a zipped jpeg, about 600K via FTP from my internet provider.

The ISP side of it is Livingston PM3's. My modem's firmware revision is 1.002a, last updated August 26th or so, I've also used the most current 'driver' for Windows '95, dated September 2nd.

The biggest reason for the Zoom purchase was CNET's suggestion. They had rated the Zoom modem well. Also it is upgradable to the official ITU standard for 56k. AND NON PnP! Which makes me smile much.

The Zoom of the past looks like it has improved overall quality of it's new products, although it did scare me to walk to the register with a Zoom product.

Zoom 56k kFlex internal

I'm currently using a Zoom 56k kFlex internal modem. I recently upgraded the flashrom to the 100-2 upgrade, and am regularly getting 42,000 - 48,000 connections (42 & 44 being the most common). I am running Linux, but I still managed to get a .tar.gz (kinda like a .zip file; compressed) and pull 4.38 KBytes/sec. through a 42,000 connection (ftp'ing the latest version of Netscape).

Zoom 56K Internal

Originally had a hayes accura 56k internal. Had all kinds of problems with it disconnecting me. Their tech support told me to download the BETA firmware patch. When I ran it, it told me I did not have a Hayes Accura Modem. Took it back to Best Buy and bought a Zoom 56k internal for $99 after rebate.

Got their firmware patch and it connects at my friends house at 46 to 48. Did a local download and got around 4.5. Now, at my house, I connect at 39 to 41. Download is around 4.0. My phone lines must not be as clean.

(This is a great illustration of the fact that different phone lines can lead to different results. - Leslie)
